Secret Recording Project?

A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record."   While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.
Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together.  Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months.  In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.
A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers.  We can't wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we'll be back with more details as they come together.

Thirty Years...

Tickets are sold out.
Thirty years of Metallica... can you believe it? We think it's cause for a major celebration! You've been asking for a while now "just what the hell are you going to do to mark 30 years as a band?" closely followed by "why don't we have more exclusive shows for Fan Club members?" We've heard you loud and clear and are beyond psyched to announce that the week of December 5, 2011 will be a full on Metallica week in the Bay Area, more specifically we will be playing four shows for Met Club members only at the historic Fillmore in San Francisco on December 5, 7, 9, and 10 to celebrate our 30th anniversary. These unique shows will include special guests and events, rare songs, varied set lists, odds and ends, and all the nutty stuff you expect from Metallica... fun for the entire family! Come to the Bay Area and spend the week with us to not only close out 2011 out with a bang, but to celebrate over three decades worth of craziness.
Participate in the entire week of festivities with special four pack tickets (one ticket for each of the four shows) and automatic entry into the contests for various other special events, available for the clever price of $19.81 (get it??). If you can't join us for the full week, we'll have individual show tickets too and as you can see we're going back to early '80's ticket pricing (but not the hair!)... single show tickets will be just $6.00 each. Both four packs and individual show tickets will be available for Fan Club members only through a reservation system and we do have to add facility fees, blah, blah. Clubbers can log in for all the details... we're taking reservations through August 8.
Hope to see you for a week of madness in December!

“OBEY YOUR MASTER” ART TRIBUTE TO METALLICA

EXHIBIT A GALLERY FOUNDER AND ARTIST RICHARD VILLA III AND LEGENDARY SKATEBOARDER TONY ALVA PRESENT
OBEY YOUR MASTER – A VISUAL SALUTE TO METALLICA
EXHIBIT TO BE UNVEILED ON JANUARY 20, 2012 IN LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles, CA – August 22, 2011 – Exhibit A Gallery founder / artist Richard Villa III and legendary skateboarder Tony Alva announced today the Obey Your Master art exhibit. Obey Your Master will feature a collection of artists from the worlds of Art, Fashion, Film, Music and Skateboarding coming together to pay tribute to Metallica.

For the exhibit, the artists have all chosen a song by the heroes of metal, and will execute their vision in their individual artistic mediums, based on their interpersonal relationship to Metallica’s lyrics and music. The final art pieces will represent each chosen song, and will be revealed on January 20th, 2012 at Exhibit A Gallery to a private reception, with all of the artists and Metallica in attendance. The pieces will be available for purchase starting that evening, through March 23, 2012.

Rock music has always inspired fans and creative types alike, empowering and influencing them personally, sonically and artistically. Some examples of the influence of Metallica’s music on artists are with Obey Giant’s renowned street artist Shepard Fairey and his politically driven propaganda art. One could make the connection between Fairey’s art and an album like Metallica’s …And Justice for All. Starting in the early 1980′s, iconic skateboarder, Steve Caballero during skate competitions would correlate his music with his aggressive skate style, he would insist to organizers to turn up the volume and blast songs off Metallica’s Kill Em’ All album. Contemporary Metal band Black Veil Brides’ 20 year old frontman Andy Biersack, grew up listening to Heavy Metal music. One of his most fond memories of early adolescence, was sitting in his living room with his childhood friend watching Metallica VHS tapes. They would thrash along, singing every lyric and banging their heads until their necks felt as if they had been in a car crash. He states “As I got older and began to write my own songs, the tone and style of James’ lyrics and singing became a huge influence to me. The use of religious and cult metaphors and tenacity with which he sang was something I aspired to, and to this day continue to be inspired by. Metallica to me is the quintessential Heavy Metal band. Equal parts darkness, intellect and vitriol”. These are just a few examples, but there have been millions more who have drawn influence from Metal music, specifically from Metallica. Many of these artists are from all walks of life, they are now leaving their own indelible marks on the world and are driven in part by the intellectual rebellious lyrics of Metallica. Most of these creative fans have never had the opportunity to do any art related to the band…
Until now!
OBEY YOUR MASTER
Exhibit A Gallery opened in 2008 with the idea of giving creative people a place to congregate.

With exhibits like Die Posers Die!Daggers Rule! The Detournements of Wynn MillerBipolar or The Totally Bitchin’ Night of the Dead, Exhibit A Gallery delivers an art experience that stimulates all the senses. Those who love unbridled creativity and diversity are welcome. Exhibit A Gallery is not your typical trendy gallery, and you won’t find wine and cheese or crackers here. Obey Your Master

The connection between music and art has always been a very powerful one for us, so the idea to show a collection of art inspired by our songs seemed like it could be pretty unique and special. That's where Los Angeles' Exhibit A Gallery founder and artist Richard Villa III came in, teaming up with legendary skateboarder Tony Alva to develop the "Obey Your Master" exhibit opening on January 20, 2012.
The collection will feature artists from the worlds of art, fashion, film, music, and skate who have each chosen a song to interpret in their own unique style. The pieces will be on display at Exhibit A Gallery in Los Angeles starting at the January 20 opening through March 23, 2012. While opening night is a private reception that we will be at along with all of the artists, Met Club members will have a chance to win passes to the reception.
If you're planning to be in the L.A. area next year, stop by. For more information, check out www.exhibitagallery.com and keep watching here for updates and chances to participate.

Lou Reed & Metallica Website Up

As you hopefully have read about in this very space, we had the distinct honor of recording with the legendary Lou Reed this past spring at HQ. We're very proud to announce that the ten songs that will comprise the album "Lulu" are complete and will be released on October 31 Worldwide and November 1 in North America.
In order to keep you completely up to speed, we have been collaborating with Lou to bring you LouReedMetallica.com, which went live over the weekend. You'll notice pretty quickly that we still have quite a bit of work to do, but the plan is to keep adding to the site as mixes are finalized, artwork is completed, photos are taken, and all the other details come together so that you're always the first to know the finer points of what's going on in the Lou Reed & Metallica world.
Check it out, let us know what you think, and keep watching... there is a lot more to come!

What is the METALLICA Club?

What is the METALLICA Club?

In 1993, the members of Metallica established their own unique Fan Club. The Metallica Club is a way for the band to keep friends, family, and fans fully informed regarding all things 'Tallica. Far more than the name "fan club" would imply, The Metallica Club exists so the band can keep a two-way line of communication open to the people who have supported them over the years. The Club is your ticket to staying up to date about what the band is up to as well as interacting with the band you love. Fully owned and operated by the band itself, the Metallica Club is a fail-safe way to know that all fan voices are heard and all requests are considered. ALL MAIL IS READ. Everyone, especially the band, wants to hear Club Member ideas!

Why should I sign up?

TICKETS AND MEET 'N GREET PASSES
As the Mighty Metallica Machine ploughs across the globe, Metallica Club Members can always be found hanging in the best seats of every stadium, arena or club. Exclusively through the Club, members are given the opportunity to purchase tickets to virtually every show on the tour's itinerary. Best of all, the Club also gives members a chance to live every fan's dream - to meet members of the band backstage! Unfortunately we can't take all the Clubbers at any given show, so to keep this opportunity fair to all members, the Club conducts an online "enter to win" drawing in advance of each tour date.

MEMBERS ONLY SHOWS
Over the years, the band has performed a number of gigs exclusively for Metallica Club Members. Some of these shows are staged in small, intimate clubs or theaters while some have been tour rehearsal shows in large arenas. Either way, these shows give the Club Member an opportunity to see shows that the average fan cannot see.
Since 1995, Metallica has given Club Members access to over 30 gigs that were not available to the general public, including the four shows held at the world famous Fillmore in San Francisco. Club Members have also been seen at a few Death Magnetic Rehearsal Shows, the Death Magnetic release parties in Berlin and London, and we can't forget the sweaty little club gigs at The Basement in Nashville, TN and at BBC Radio One in London. Were you there?
EXCLUSIVE CONTESTS
As if tickets, backstage passes, and exclusive concerts were not enough to make you want to join the Club, there is more! Five lucky Club Members (and their guests) were invited to the band's HQ to, not only listen to some of Death Magnetic before it was released, but to watch the band participate in a radio show hosted by Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters. Club Members also had a chance to go to a special BBQ Party at the Bonnaroo festival as well as a party celebrating Death Magnetic in Denmark.
And that's just what has happened recently. In the past, an extremely lucky contest winner won an all expense paid trip to watch the band record the St. Anger album. In the summer of 2002, Metallica HQ was the home of the "Launch Party." Club Members won a contest to hang out, eat and drink with the members of Metallica. Then the band performed a special show just for them! And back in 1998, eight winners won a contest to, not only go on tour for a week, but to be part of Metallica's road crew, which included their own tour bus!
The Metallica Club is constantly creating new ways to give away hard to obtain prizes. Basically, the shit we give away you CAN NOT FIND ANYWHERE ELSE! A few of the prizes the Club has given away in the past include: tour jackets, VIP passes, loads of autographed materials, band instruments, and even the greasy nuts off James' car used in the "I Disappear" video! The Club is constantly thinking of cooler and more unique prizes to give away. The past speaks for itself, so who knows what will happen next!
SO WHAT! - THE CLUB MAGAZINE
Four times per year, all members of The Metallica Club receive the official magazine of The Metallica Club, So What! This collector's item is a 48-page glossy, full color magazine that brings club members the most Metallica news, photos, and inside information.
The boys are major contributors to each magazine answering your letters, providing personal photos and letters, judging contests, and providing a behind the scenes view that you won't find anywhere else. Each issue of So What! brings the members of the club even farther into the world of Metallica.
MEMBERSHIP PACKAGE

We also expand the Fan Club Magazine, So What, by giving you a Virtual So What! section that offers up additional content from the cutting room floor and also gives you a chance to catch up on issues that may have been missed. Content is frequently updated which should give you a reason to keep coming back to Metallica.com.
